Night Nappies

Because feeding tends to trigger your baby's bowel movements, you will probably need to change the nappy whenever you feed. You can therefore only really begin to use one nappy for the entire night as soon as your baby drops the night-time feeds.

When you start to use one nappy throughout the night, you can use an ordinary nappy with several boosters. Be prepared to experiment a bit to find the right level of absorbency (or the right number of boosters). The boosters can be placed inside the nappy or between the nappy and the wrap, or both. AIO nappies tend to become very bulky when you add lots of boosters, which leads to gaps around the legs and therefore leaking. For this reason, a two-part nappy is best for night-time nappies. However, you can also buy special night-time nappies that are more absorbent than normal cloth nappies. These nappies can also be used in the daytime with children who are very heavy wetters.

Hemp and bamboo boosters (or pads) are the most absorbent. If your child is a particularly heavy wetter then use several hemp boosters or pads if you aren't going to buy a special night-time nappy.

Another convenient solution is to use a pre-fold inside a normal nappy.

Swim nappies

You can use cloth nappies as swim nappies. If you choose to do this, use only the wrap, or an unstuffed/ unfilled pocket nappy. The trick in choosing a swim nappy is to make sure it fits snugly. The point of a swim nappy is to stop poo leakages rather than trapping urine.

Purpose designed swim nappies have a cotton or mesh lining to feel soft against baby's skin, with an EVA layer that has a pretty polyester or cotton design on the outside. (EVA is a stress-resistant water-proof material similar to rubber or vinyl.) Most have a Velcro fastening with ties for added security.

For girls, most full body swimming costumes do not have a swim nappy incorporated into it, so you will have to ensure one is worn underneath the costume.

Remember, no child under the age of 3 should be exposed to the sun for any length of time because their skin is too delicate. When going swimming, I would recommend buying a full-body swim suit, under which a thin cloth nappy can be worn. Sunscreen (Factor 50+) should be used on the face, ears, hands and feet, and this should be reapplied frequently.
