AIO – nappy and wrap, all in on. May or may not be a pocket nappy.

Aplix – hook and loop fastening; similar to Velcro, but much more durable

Booster – layer of material inserted into a nappy to increase its absorbency.

Change bag – any bag used to carry the essentials for nappy changing while out and about

Liner – material put between skin and the nappy, designed to catch solid waste (to make nappy changes easier) while allowing the moisture to go through and be absorbed by the nappy. Can be flushable, disposable or reuseable. Flushable ones are made of paper and are biodegradable. Most flushable liners can be washed and reused a few times: a pack of 200 will last a month if you are not washing them. If you have a macerator toilet check whether it can deal with flushable liners as not all can. Disposables cannot be flushed. Reuseable or washable liners can be made from fleece, cotton, silk, polyester or other materials. Polyester liners have a 'top' (smooth) and 'bottom' (furry) side to stop them sliding around inside the nappy.

Nappy bag - any water-proof bag used to carry soiled nappied while out and about

Nappy bin – any bucket with a lid, for storing soiled nappies before they are laundered.

Nappy Nippa – three-armed plastic device used instead of safety pins to fasten nappies. Also commonly called 'Snappi'.

Mesh bag – drawstring bag made from mesh, placed inside the nappy bin to make removing soiled nappies easier.

Pocket nappy - a style of all-in-one where the absorbent part of the nappy is not stitched in, but is removable to increase speed of drying.

Poppers – press-studs.

Pre-fold – a square of cloth several layers thick that has been stitched together into 3 panels so that you have a thicker panel in the middle

Wipes – material used to clean baby’s bottom during nappy changes; can be home-made or manufactured - see the ‘Make Your Own' page for details.

Wrap – water-proof PVC or PUL material used as the outside of any 2-part nappy system (some people prefer a water-resistant fleece over the water-proof PUL as their wrap for night-time use as this is breathable).
